Tutorial papavero uncinetto - Crochet poppy tutorial

*ITA*

And the first tutorial is here at last! Lots of other projects will come, as anticipated in the previous post: http://giadacortellini.blogspot.it/2015/01/tutorial-in-arrivo-per-voi-tutorials.html

Let's begin today with a very delicate, retro and versatile flower I used as a unisex boutonnière. Anyway, you can decide to use it as a brooch, or a decoration for a necklace or a dress, a bag, a hat, a cushion and whatever your imagination will suggest; if you prefer you can omit the stem or make it shorter according to your own needs.

This tutorial comes with diagrams and step-by-step pictures and instructions, so it's quite easy and suitable for beginners. Anyway, if you need help don't hesitate to email me: ligeia79@gmil.com

I used NATURA Just Cotton DMC thread in the colors Lobelia, Forêt and Tropic Brown and a 2,50 mm (C/2) crochet hook.

The instructions are in American English but you can easily convert them into British English using this UK and US crochet convertion chart:

PETALI INFERIORI - LOWER PETALS

Filato NATURA Just Cotton DMC color Lobelia

Iniziare il lavoro partendo dall'area gialla

1. Fare un cerchio magico e lavorare all'interno 1 cat e 13 mb. Stringere il cerchio tirando il filo. Chiudere il giro con una mbss sulla catenella d'inizio giro;
2. 2 cat, 2 mma in ognuna delle 4 mb seguenti, 1 mma nella seguente;
3. Voltare il lavoro e fare 2 cat, 1 mma nella seguente mma, 2 mma nella seguente, 1 mma, 2 mma nella seguente e così via per 8 maglie, finire il giro con una mma sulle 2 cat d'inizio del giro precedente;

NATURA Just Cotton DMC thread in the color Lobelia

Start from the yellow part.

1. Magic loop/ring, ch 1 and 13 sc inside; pull the tail to tighten the circle, sl st in first ch;
2. ch 2, 2 hdc in each of the following 4 sc, 1 hdc in last stitch;
3. Turn work, chain 2, 1 hdc in next stitch, 2 hdc in next stitch, 1 hdc, 2 hdc in the next one and so on for 8 stitches; end row with a hdc;
4. Turn work, ch 2, 1 hdc in next hdc, 1 hdc, 2 hdc in next stitch and so on for 12 stitches, end row with a hdc. Fasten off.

(Click to enlarge image!)

Crochet now the pink part.

5. Without turning work, insert hook in the second sc on the left of the petal, yarn over, chain 2, continue working this petal like the previous one. There will be 2 sc left between the two petals. Fasten off.

(Click to enlarge images!)

Crochet now the green part.

6. Without turning work, insert hook in one of the hdc of the petal, yarn over, ch 1, sc all around the petals, increasing 1 sc on each of the 4 angles and working 1 sl st in the two sc between the two petals. Close round with a sl st in first chain. Fasten off.

(Click to enlarge images!)

UPPER PETALS

Crochet the upper petals like you did for the lower ones but omitting the last hdc round, turning work when starting the second petal and working 3 sc instead of 5 at the side of each petal. N.B.: Turn work before crocheting the last sc row. You will have 10 sc on the two petals, 2 sc on each of the four angles, 3 sc at each side and 2 sl st between the two petals for a total of 42 sc. Fasten off.

PISTILLO - PISTIL

Filato NATURA Just Cotton DMC colore Forêt

1. Fare un cerchio magico e lavorare all'interno 2 cat e 9 mma; stringere il cerchio tirando il filo e chiudere il giro con una mbss nella prima catenella d'inizio giro;
2. 1 cat, lavorare 1 mb in costa dietro su ogni mma del giro precedente; chiudere il giro con una mbss;

NATURA Just Cotton DMC thread in the color Forêt

1. Magic loop/ring, ch 2 and 9 hdc inside; pull the tail to tighten the circle, sl st in first ch;
2. ch 1, back loop sc in each hdc across, slip stitch;
3. 5 hdc decrease for a total of 5 hdc around. Fasten off leaving a long tail: you will use it to sew the pistil to the flower.

STELO - STEM

(Clicca sull'immagine per ingrandirla! - Click to enlarge image!)

*ITA*

Filato NATURA Just Cotton DMC color Forêt

1. Fare un cerchio magico e lavorare all'interno 1 cat e 4 mb.
2. Lavorare 5 aumenti, quindi 2 mb in costa dietro in ogni mb del giro precedente;

NATURA Just Cotton DMC thread in the color Forêt

1. Magic loop/ring, ch 1 and 4 sc inside. Crochet now all around in a spiral without joining each round with a slip stitch.
2. 5 back loop sc increase for a total of 10 back loop sc;
3. 5 more back loop sc increase for a total of 15 back loop sc. Sl st, fasten off leaving a long tail: you will use it to sew the stem to the flower.

CONFEZIONE - ASSEMBLY

*ITA*

*ENG*

Overlap the two petals as shown in the picture below and sew them together, then sew on the pistil.

(Click to enlarge image!)

Stuff the pistil with some fiberfill (I filled it with a short chain I crocheted with the same thread used for the pistil) and then sew it on the flower. With a thinner and contrasting thread (I used Babylo DMC), make the embroidery on the pistil and with Tropic Brown NATURA Just Cotton DMC make an emboidery all around it.

Sew the stem to the back of the flower.

FOGLIA - LEAF

*ITA*
